Background
Sharon Vogel is a partner in our Toronto office. Ms. Vogel was called to the Ontario Bar in 1993. She graduated from the University of Toronto with an LL.B. in 1991. In 1996, Ms. Vogel obtained her LL.M. from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
Ms. Vogel obtained her Bachelor of Arts from McMaster University in 1988 where she majored in Political Science.
Areas of Practice
- Ms. Vogel practices fidelity and fraud law, focussing on the areas of bank fraud, theft, breach of trust, and material misrepresentation.
- Ms. Vogel also practices surety and construction law, working on matters frequently involving construction disputes relating to mega-projects in various jurisdictions.
Professional Experience
- Ms. Vogel has rendered opinions on coverage and claims handling issues in respect of fidelity and surety bonds, errors and omissions policies and construction insurance policies.
- Experience representing various fidelity bonding companies, defending claims and pursuing subrogated actions.
- Extensively involved in the creation of the Fraud Law Group which acts for an extensive array of clients, including many major financial institutions, advising them with respect to issues such as cheque kiting and other cheque frauds, Bills of Exchange Act issues, credit and debit card fraud, conspiracy, misappropriation, conversion, kickback schemes, and other corporate security issues.
- Specialized expertise in fraud recovery efforts including Mareva injunctions, tracing orders, disclosure orders, summary judgment, restitution orders, and proceeds of crime legislation.
- Established contacts with private investigators, law firms abroad, and other sources for locating, seizing and freezing assets.
- Extensive experience representing surety bonding companies with respect to various claims on construction projects, including performance bond claims and labour and material payment bond claims.
- Ms. Vogel has acted with respect to various construction projects on behalf of owners, developers, general contractors, subcontractors and suppliers with respect to issues relating to construction contracts, construction liens, trust claims, insurance, and negligence claims.
