Background

Tim Sehmer is the Regional Managing Partner of our Vancouver office, where he practices in the area of corporate commercial law.  Mr. Sehmer was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1979.  He is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School at York University with a Bachelor of Laws in 1978.  Prior to that, he attended the University of British Columbia in the Faculty of Commerce.

Areas of Practice

  • Mr. Sehmer practices in the areas of corporate commercial law, banking, and construction financing.

Professional Experience

  • Corporate and commercial law, with an emphasis on acting for borrowers or lenders in all types of debt financings, including real estate development loans, note purchase transactions, subordinated debt issues, project financings, investment trust financings and swaps.
  • By way of example, has handled a sale of notes by a British Columbia forestry companies to US insurance companies, a gold loan to a British Columbia-based mining company, a subordinated note issue by a British Columbia credit union, a private equity and debt investment by a non-resident in a British Columbia forestry company, a major financing by British Columbia’s largest dairy cooperative with a syndicate of five lenders, and numerous real estate development loans.
  • Other practice area of interest is closely-held corporations, and he acts for a diverse range of family-owned companies.  In addition to corporate and commercial law aspects, this practice involves elements of family law, tax and estate planning.

Professional and Community Activities

  • Vancouver Regional Leader of the firm's Private Company Practice Group.
  • Taught the Close Corporations seminar at the University of British Columbia.
  • Chair and Speaker in numerous courses for the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia and client seminars.
  • Founding Member and former Chair of the Banking Law Subsection of the British Columbia branch of the Canadian Bar Association.
  • Director of several community organizations.
