Background

Kathryn Ash is a partner at the firm practicing in our Toronto office.  Kathryn was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1981.  She graduated from the University of Western Ontario Law School in 1979.  Prior to that, Kathryn obtained an Honours B.A. from Queen’s University in Kingston.

Areas of Practice

  • Kathryn practices in the firm’s securities and capital markets practice group in the fields of mutual funds, investment management and securities law.
  • Kathryn also in a member of the firm’s pension law professional group and works in the area of financial institution law.

Professional Experience

  • Kathryn has advised a diverse representation of Canadian and foreign investment management clients with respect to publicly offered or privately placed investment funds, registration, various financial products (including securities lending, derivatives and repurchase and reverse repurchase agreements) and regulatory needs.
  • With her unusual blend of securities, financial institution and trust experience, she has advised clients in areas where those disciplines intersect, such as suppliers to the securities industry with respect to the provision of their services.
  • Prior to joining the firm, she was Vice-President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of a large Canadian mutual fund company where she was responsible for all of the company’s legal needs, including reporting issuer requirements, product development, mutual fund regulatory issues and compliance.
  • Before that, she worked for a number of years with a Canadian chartered bank dealing primarily in the areas of corporate trust services, including securities custody and settlement, pension plan trusteeship, global custody, securities lending and corporate debt trusteeship.
  • Kathryn began her legal career in the law department of Canada’s leading telecommunications manufacturer practising extensively in the area of technology law as well as treasury operations and venture capital work.
